A Beginner’s Guide to Balanced Eating

Balanced eating isn’t about strict rules or “perfect” foods. It’s about eating a variety of healthy foods most of the time, and paying attention to how you eat. Canada’s food guide offers a simple, flexible framework.

The food guide plate

Health Canada’s plate is an easy visual for building a meal:

  • Half the plate: vegetables and fruits. Fresh, frozen and canned all count.
  • A quarter: whole grain foods — for example, whole grain bread or pasta, brown rice, oats or quinoa.
  • A quarter: protein foods — for example, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts and seeds, eggs, fish, poultry, lean meat, and lower-fat milk and yogurt.

Canada’s food guide encourages choosing plant-based protein foods more often. It uses the plate as a guide, not a rule for every meal or snack.

Why variety matters

Different foods provide different nutrients, so eating a range of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and protein foods across the week helps you get what you need. A simple way to add variety: try one new vegetable or grain each week, or rotate your usual protein choices.

Make water your drink of choice

The food guide recommends water as your usual drink and suggests limiting sugary drinks. Read more about hydration.

Limit highly processed foods

Highly processed foods — such as many sugary drinks, sweets, chips and processed meats — often contain more sodium, sugars or saturated fat. The food guide suggests eating them less often and in smaller amounts, and cooking with ingredients that are low in these nutrients. Food labels can help you compare products.

Healthy eating is more than food

Canada’s food guide also highlights how we eat:

  • Be mindful of your eating habits — take time to eat and notice hunger and fullness.
  • Cook more often, and involve others in planning and preparing meals.
  • Enjoy your food, including foods that are part of your culture and traditions.
  • Eat meals with others when you can.
  • Be aware that food marketing can influence your choices.

Getting started

  1. Look at your usual dinner. Could half the plate be vegetables and fruits?
  2. Swap one refined grain for a whole grain this week.
  3. Try one plant-based protein meal, such as a lentil soup or bean chili.
  4. Plan a few meals ahead. Simple meal planning for busy people.
