According to Canada’s food guide, planning what you eat can help you make healthier choices, save time and money, reduce food waste and cook more often.
Jot down ideas for meals and snacks. Look for recipe inspiration, and start with what you already have in the fridge and cupboard so nothing goes to waste. Think about your week: busy days call for quick meals or leftovers.
List the ingredients you need. Check flyers for healthy foods on sale, and keep a shared list where everyone in the household can add items as they run out.
Stick to your list to save money and reduce waste. Health Canada’s budget tips include:
Post your plan where everyone can see it, and give each person a task. Cooking extra for leftovers, or prepping basics like chopped vegetables ahead of time, saves time later in the week.
| Plan | Idea |
|---|---|
| 2 quick meals | Stir-fry with frozen vegetables; whole grain wraps with beans |
| 2 cook-once, eat-twice meals | A big pot of lentil soup or chili for leftovers |
| 1 sheet-pan dinner | Roasted vegetables with chicken, tofu or chickpeas |
| 1 “use it up” night | Combine leftovers or what’s left in the fridge |
| 1 flexible night | Eat out, try something new, or keep it simple |
Health Canada suggests saving your meal plans and favourite recipes, so you can reuse them. After a few weeks you’ll have a rotation of plans that work for your household.
